Project 2: Extreme Attention
For this project, I chose to approach one of the ideas behind extreme attention - bringing attention to things that otherwise would often be overlooked. Specifically, I portrayed the foot - a body part which many people often consciously avoid looking at, and is often covered by socks as part of societal standards of dress in many countries. However, in this piece I force the look at this foot through composition and textures that triggers the viewer's emotions. In my work, i portrayed a foot, a body part often frowned upon by many when they see it. I want to use a combination of bright neon lighting to attract the viewers attention, while combining different images often associated with “discomfort” or “disgust” when seen on the foot.
The second version of the photo was edited with a focus on disgust - a different approach of catching attention to the first one. Colors, textures, and lighting were modified through Procreate.
I was inspired by the coca cola can in the freezer, the veins of my hands, the discomfort expressed by my friends upon seeing feet, and artist Lisa Litovka's photographs of feet.
Overall I think I am pretty happy about how this piece turned out. I think that either versions has their own quirks, and they both trigger feelings of disgust from unexpecting viewers.
